Making Time for God

"Show me your ways, O Lord; teach me Your paths." (Psalm 25:4)

Spending time with God is one of the most rewarding experiences in life. Unfortunately, a lot of times this is the one relationship that tend to neglect. I get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the day and when I do sit down to commune with God, I'm normally too sleepy to focus on his word like I should.

I read this quote recently and although I'm no longer on facebook, it put things into perspective for me. "One of the great uses of Twitter and Facebook will be to prove at the Last Day that prayerlessness was not from lack of time.” Wow! We have time for a lot of other things, but when it comes to the most important thing, we short change him.

If it's just five minutes, make time for the Lord. Become intimate with him and discover him in ways like never before. He will speak to us and give you the desires of our hearts when we allow him in. He's always there waiting. We just have to open the door. My days tend to be a lot more clear and smoother when I spend that intimate time with God.

Anything that is not growing is dead. If our relationship with God is not growing, it's dead.

Happy Love Day!

And we have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
1 John 4:16

Happy Valentine's Day! I love love! I love to be in love! I love love stories! Love is the key to it all. God loves us unconditionally. If we showed that same love to those around us, the world would be amazing! Love conquers all things and it covers a multitude of sin! I am so thankful to have others to love and be loved, but most of all to be loved by God. Without his love, we would be nothing. Let's love everyone all of the time and watch God work!

Have an amazing day! I LOVE YOU!

Let Go and Let God

"Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Lord, thou wilt ordain peace for us: for thou also hast wrought all our works in us." Isaiah 26:3,12

As I listened to the song "Let Go, Let God" today, I just meditated on the lyrics, As soon as I stopped worrying about how the story ends, that's when things start happening. Wow....I think about when I sit down and read a good book how sometimes I can't enjoy the story for flipping to the last chapter to see how it will end. That's how I think a lot of us are with life. We don't enjoy the moment because we are too worried about the end result.

A dear friend told me the other day that life is a series of complicated events. That is true, but God allows those complicated events to become easier when we keep our eyes and minds stayed on him. No one ever said this life would be easy, but we have to just let go, and let God. He is in complete control.

What Kind of Fruit Are You Bearing?

"And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience....."
Colossians 1:10-11

Trees and vines are used as symbolism in the bible for bearing fruit.

What does it truly mean to "bear fruit"?
To bear fruit means to produce successful results. To bear fruit means we must stay steadfast and hold on to God's word, not faltering and succumbing to sin, but glorifying God in all that we do. John 15: 8 states, "Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples." As I studied scriptures on this topic, I noticed several passages in the bible talking about if the tree was not bearing good fruit, then the branches were broken off and cast into the fire. It gives me hope that although there may be some imperfections about us, the whole man isn't totally corrupt. Those bad things can be broken off and thrown away, preserving the whole "tree."

Good Fruit
Even good trees, as John 15: 1 states, "Every branch that does bear good fruit is purgeth that it may bring forth more fruit. So although a tree may be "good," it has to be pruned. My husband and I decided to plant some trees in our yard. We both worked very hard on that tree. After a year, unfortunately, my husband accidentally ran over the tree. I mean tore it down to nothing! Well, a year later that tree had grown up and was beautiful! Although it had been broken down to nothing, it turned out to be probably more beautiful than it would have been had he not mowed it down!

Bad Fruit
Matthew 7:17 tells us that a corrupt tree bringeth forth corrupt fruit." 19. "Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down and cast unto the fire." There is no use or space for a bad tree. It's not worth keeping because it is not producing anything beneficial.

Fruits of the Spirit
If we possess the fruits of the spirit, then we surely will be good trees bearing good fruit. We can't have some and lack some. We have to possess ALL of these fruits in order to bear good fruit.

Love
Joy
Peace
Longsuffering
Kindness
Goodness
Faithfulness
Gentleness
Self-control

I will leave you with this verse from Matthew 7:10:
"Wherefore by their fruits you shall know them." Let's be known by the good fruits that we bear!

Flying Bunnies & Frozen Snail Shells

"He restores my soul." Psalms 23:3

I had an amazing weekend and am sooooo rejuvenated as a wife, as a mother, and as an educator. I attended a three day workshop in Jackson just learning on ways that I can improve in my classroom. It's kind of like a revival at church, you go to get that renewing of your faith. My kids were looking at me like I was a new human when I returned (probably because I took a 15 minute hot shower with no interruptions and I watched televison without getting the remote snatched out of my hand).

When I returned home, my own children were in ready mode (they never get out of ready mode), but we were so productive. I think it was because I was so hands on with them as opposed to being in the other room working on something else. We shot a commercial for my oldest daughter's English class, we completed a Newton's Law poster board for her gifted class. My oldest son found a snail shell in the backyard and decided to freeze it (I got an IM from his teacher this morning asking me what in the world was this thing unthawing in her class???? Yes, he took it to school without my knowledge). We also cleaned the yard and I actually killed the clothes monster....well almost. He never really dies.

Anyways, I particularly like to have sit down time with my kids at the dinner table (something I rarely do), but I notice every time I do sit, there is some intriguing conversation going on. Well, my kids were playing a game where they would say a word a phrase and the other would have to say the opposite. Well, my oldest two children where all into it and the youngest two decided they wanted to play. They are five so they come up with some of the most outlandish things to say. Well, my youngest son says, "Flying Bunnies!" and every body just stopped and looked at him like he was a flying bunny and burst into laughter. I realized at that moment that it is the simple things in life that means the most AND that things are a lot less chaotic when I'm right there in the middle instead of being all over the place. God has a way of teaching us lessons when we aren't even expecting them. Now, back to the frozen snail shell. Any other time I would have flown off the handle for him taking something like that to school, but I realized that he is a boy and boys will be boys. Moms just have to choose their battles.

I'll leave you with this: God is amazing. Life is amazing. Someone sent me this little quote, "Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance."

By the way, for those of you who receive this via email, these are my blog post and not just me emailing you random things :). You can check me out at writingmamaof4.blogspot.com Be blessed!

Chicken Fajitas

I'm still questioning myself on this one, but yesterday I decided to get the chicken fajitas from the school cafeteria. End result: I hurled all night and now I lay helpless in my bed (talk about a day off). I'm like ok Lord, what is really going on?! When faced with adversity,I oftentimes ask the Lord what is it that he wants me to learn. Well, I've come to the realization that no matter how much I subtract from my age, I'm still getting older and my body is changing. I can't eat everything I ate when I was 19, I can't stay up past 12 and expect to function properly the next day, and when it rains something will ache.

As Christian women, we must take on this same mentality. We are maturing so we can't do the things we did at 21, go the places we went or say the things we said. There has to be an awakening within us that says change is inevitable. I cannot stay right here because all of the dynamics around me are changing, so must I. And this change is needed in order for us to lead healthy lifestyles and not to continually suffer the consequences of our immature actions. God has a greater plan for us all. We must embrace it by taking the necessary actions to grow beyond where we are.

I will leave you with this: Philippians 3:12-14

"Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."

Challenges

Being a full time wife, mother to four, teacher to hormonal teenagers, and graduate student can sometimes be a bit overwhelming. I tend to have more than my share of "challenging" days, and yesterday was no exception. For starters, my alarm clock did not go off so needless to say my home was awaken to pure chaos! I whisked children to and fro shouting out orders and giving them a very small window to get them accomplished. When we finally got in the car it was raining cats and dogs and it was cold (I HATE being cold!) So after yielding at every stop to throw my children out, I finally made it to work....on two wheels! By third period (my planning time) I was in tears at my desk. I began to question every aspect of my life. Is my plate too full? Am I depriving my own children of an attentive mother? Is it all worth it?!

Well, thank God for amazing friends. I called my bestie up and let her know that I was in crisis mode. She stopped everything she was doing to listen and to allow God to use her. What he gave her was that I have to be more disciplined and systematic in my approach to my every day life because not only do I have a lot on my plate, I have a lot of challenging things on my plate. My mother in law, who is my God sent, also offered the same advice (it's like every one gets it, but me....go figure).

There is a scripture that says to whom much is given, much is required. I may not be a CEO of a major corporation, but I am the CEO of my home and it is up to me to keep that machine well oiled and operating and that comes through being disciplined and systematic. I also must learn to take time for myself so that my sanity is in tact! As women we have a lot on our plates and it won't slow down any time soon. Yes it's challenging, yes it gets hard, but as my bestie says, "We have to keep on pushing. We can't stop running the race."

I will leave you with this "And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not." Galatians 6:9

Obedience is better than sacrifice

"Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?" Romans 16:6

"Obedience is better than sacrifice" is a scripture that I OFTEN have my children recite. I want it embedded in their brains so that they won't make the same mistakes over and over again. I also want to them to not get in trouble, but it seems sometimes the more I make them recite it, the worse they get! This is true for us as adults as well (and I'm sure God feels toward me like I feel toward my own children). When we continue to make the same mistakes over and over again, knowing they are wrong, God is not pleased. When we get in trouble, God is not pleased. So we can't merely recite the scriptures and say obeying is what we will do, we have to practice it in our everyday lives because obedience IS better than sacrifice.

If we just obey on the front end, our rewards are so much greater: peace and joy. When we disobey we make sacrifices and those sacrifices are normally detrimental to us. It causes us to give up something we don't want to or suffer something that we do not want. Let's go back to childlike faith and simply obey God in the small and big things. God wants peace in our lives. To accomplish this we must obey his word. He knows way more than we could ever wrap our minds around. Let's trust him and allow him to lead the way! Let's make sure that we are obeying God and not sin! As the opening scripture staes: obeying God leads to righteousness. Obeying sin leads to death.

Are you Childish or Childlike?

"When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, but when I became a man, I put away childish things." 1 Corinthians 3:11

Childish is defined as a characteristic of children especially as it regards to behaivor or judgement. Childlike is defined as an offspring.

Now to be childish is to act like a child, to understand as a child. We all go through this phase where we are learning and acquiring all of the information we need to grow. I like to think of it as our developmental stage. Where the problem comes in a lot of the time is that we stay in the childish phase too long...sometimes people never move beyond this phase. In Hebrews 5:12-14, "For when for the time we ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil." In these verses immaturity is the focus. We have to get beyond the milk and move to the strong meat. We cannot be students forever, but we must move into the role as teacher when we can discern good from evil.

To be childlike is to totally rely and trust on another. If you think about it, children are very trusting and often taken advantage of because they are so pure. You can pretty much tell them anything and they will believe it. Our trust in God has to be that of a child. We have to be completely trusting in all things! In 1 Peter 2:2-3 it says, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thererby: If so be ye have tasted the Lord is gracious." We have to have a longing for God's word like a newborn babe for his mother's milk! One of my friends is trying to wean her son off of breast milk and it is very difficult. He has to have it and does not want to give it up! We have to have that same attitude when it comes to God's word. We cannot just merely be hearers either. We must apply his word in our daily lives, but we must do it with a humble spirit.

Being childish should be for a season but what Ephesians 4: 14-16 shows us is that we must move from one phase to the next to reach spiritual maturity, "That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: From when the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love."

God's goal is that we as Christians leave our childish ways behind, and grow into spiritual maturity through the preaching and teaching of his holy word! Be blessed!

A Prayer for Cleansing (Psalm 51)

David was truly a man after God's own heart. In this Psalm, David recognizes that he had failed God. Throughout all of his transgressions, he still maintained a certain level of sensitivity to sin. He acknowledged his mistakes and goes forth to ask for forgiveness and seeks inner renewal.

We all are born into sin and we fall short...A LOT (at least I know I do)! Although this happens, we cannot stay right there. We must have a repentant heart and move beyond our transgressions to live a glorious life for GOD! After all, it is what he desires.

This prayer is one of cleansing that I encourage each one of you to pray if you are battling with an issue and need to be restored. Let's take back what the devil is trying to take away! I pray blessings upon each and every one of you!

Dear God,

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from sin.
For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.
Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.
Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from thy presence: and take not thy Holy Spirit from me.
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation: and uphold me with thy free spirit.
Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall show forth thy praise.
For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the wall of Jerusalem.
Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.

Amen

Now let's move forward in our walk, never looking back to our former selves, but with hope of a better future!
